Achievements
Effective composting
We worked with Completely Composting to help educate locals and our school kids on how to compost effectively here on Rakiura.

Assisted web development
We support island locals by helping them get online with free or very cheap web hosting and design by sharing ours.

Community meetings
Each year we bring together a series of local presenters to share important updates on what’s coming up for our community.

Community calendar
An online calendar that spotlights Rakiura events for locals and visitors alike. Stay connected with our community.

Visitor information kiosks
Interactive tablet kiosk stations at Stewart Island Flights and the Bluff Ferry Terminal for visitors to find out more about the island.

Waitangi hangi
We’ve worked with others to host a series of cultural history celebrations to mark the signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Emergency helicopter landing pad
We worked alongside the Stewart Island Health Committee and sponsors to support the installation of an emergency heli pad.

Litter traps
We worked with Fulton Hogan and Southland District Council to install litter traps on storm water drains to protect our marine environment.

Mental health workshops
Workshop sessions to help local islanders look after their well being. Set up in collaboration with the Stewart Island Health Committee

What’s next?
We are moving forward with a range of new projects for 2025. Find out more by clicking learn more buttons.
Supporting solar power
Our community has one of the highest electricity prices in the country and it’s fossil fuel based. We will be working alongside Rewiring Aotearoa to share information and support on going green with solar power. Cheaper and better for our environment, what’s not to get excited about? Keep an eye out for Electrify Rakiura!

Visitor information kiosks
Interactive information kiosks at key visitor locations such as the flights depot and ferry terminals. Visitors and locals can find out what they can do and what’s coming up on the island. This will extend the reach of our community calendar and other information in a practical, easy to use kiosk format.

E-waste management
Computers, phones, tablets and other forms of technology are both a recycling resource and a fire hazard if not disposed of properly. We are keen to help locals manage electronic waste effectively so we get the best of both worlds and help do our bit for the environment.

Assisted web-development
Low cost or free web development and shared hosting to get local small businesses and groups online and connecting with the world. We help islanders get past technical and cost barriers.

IT and tech support workshops
We’re helping locals build confidence with IT and technology so they can reap the benefits of staying connected and getting things done cheaply and quickly.

24/7 available automatic external defibrillator (AED)
Rakiura has several AED spread through the township but they’re behind locked doors. We’re working to establish an AED station in a central location that can be accessed at any time, as quickly as possible. Each minute is crucial.
