Future Rakiura has stacks of ideas on our register

Some are active projects, some are ideas that have yet to come to life pending capacity, funding or another type of dependency. If you see something you think you can help with, consider joining us and getting stuck in.

Happening in 2025/26

2025 is a big year for Future Rakiura. We’re expanding the list of projects we’re delivering and supporting.

E-Waste management. Computers, phones, tablets and other forms of technology are both a recycling resource and a fire hazard if not disposed of properly. We are keen to help locals manage electronic waste effectively so we get the best of both worlds and help do our bit for the environment.

Upgraded conference equipment for the community centre to enable our residents to connect with the world using professional quality technology including a large screen, easy to use speaker system and quality conference camera.

24/7 accessible AED. There are a few AEDs on the island but if an emergency strikes after hours, getting to them behind locked doors could be tricky. We’re keen to work on getting an AED set up in a sheltered but accessible location to add to the existing units available.

Assisted web development. An online presence is essential for our small community. Future Rakiura is helping locals get online and build their web presence by combining and sharing our hosting package and building simple websites free of charge.

Community meeting. Small communities have an opportunity to build stronger connections and shared goals. We aim to help our community keep up to date with things that matter to us. Future Rakiura works alongside the Stewart Island Promotions Association and the Stewart Island/Rakiura Community Board to bring this annual event to the locals.

Ideas still on the drawing board

These are some great ideas that have been captured but we’re not quite ready to take them on. These are great opportunities for our members to take the lead and make a difference.

Community market to maximise and build on the existing informal barter and gifting economy. Locals trading with locals in a way that’s easier to access without needing to “be in the know”. We know islanders sometimes don’t use dollars as currency, more often than not we deal in blue cod fillets and crays.

Community event supplies. Purchase and loan system for a community owned marquee, trestle tables and associated outdoor event resources available to support local events.

Emergency water supply. Believe it or not, local properties can run out of their tank water supply during extended dry periods on Rakiura. A centralised emergency water supply could be established to help locals with small water tanks to get through dry spells.

Meet the candidates. Democracy relies on participation and government policies have a direct impact on our lives. Future Rakiura wants to work on helping locals get to know who their local candidates are and what they stand for. Being an informed voter is makes a difference.

Public drinking water fountain to enable visitors and locals alike to refill personal reusable water bottles quickly and easy to reduce reliance on single use plastic bottles.
