Future Rakiura has stacks of ideas on our register

Some are active projects, some are ideas that have yet to come to life pending capacity, funding or another type of dependency. If you see something you think you can help with, consider joining us and getting stuck in.
  • Composting workshop to help locals improve the efficiency of their composting process and take retain nutrient resources for our local food production
  • Upgraded conference equipment for the community centre to enable our residents to connect with the world using professional quality technology including a large screen, easy to use speaker system and quality conference camera.
  • Public drinking water fountain to enable visitors and locals alike to refill personal reusable water bottles quickly and easy to reduce reliance on single use plastic bottles.
  • Community market to maximise and build on the existing informal barter and gifting economy. Locals trading with locals in a way that’s easier to access without needing to “be in the know”. We know islanders sometimes don’t use dollars as currency, more often than not we deal in blue cod fillets and crays.
  • 24/7 accessible AED. There are a few AEDs on the island but if an emergency strikes after hours, getting to them behind locked doors could be tricky. We’re keen to work on getting an AED set up in a sheltered but accessible location to add to the existing units available.
  • Community offal pit. Hunting and fishing are very popular with tourists and locals alike. Once you’ve processed the cuts or fillets you’re left with carcass frames and no easy way to dispose of them. A communal offal pit will help better manage carcass disposal to reduce unwelcome dumping on beaches and down road banks.
  • Seasonal worker social events. Every busy season our community takes on a large number of seasonal workers to meet the extra demand. A social event will help temporary residents build connections, make some new friends and find out more about living in our small community and what they can do in their spare time.
  • Community event supplies. Purchase and loan system for a community owned marquee, trestle tables and associated outdoor event resources available to support local events.
  • Emergency water supply. Believe it or not, local properties can run out of their tank water supply during extended dry periods on Rakiura. A centralised emergency water supply could be established to help locals with small water tanks to get through dry spells.
